Over the last few years I've gotten really into studying figure drawing. At first it felt like returning to my roots, but quickly I started seeing that truly amazing illustrative figures originate with design fundamentals.


It's not that the figure needs to be beautiful, it's that it needs to be compelling. And this can come from being well balanced or purposefully imbalanced to evoke meaning and emotion. Bodies are the tumbling shapes and rhythms of forms that intersect in interesting ways. For the most part, all people follow the same ratios that are just stretched and softened in different ways.
